DUTCH: Innovation in Healthcare Education

With 132 million euros (of which 84 conditional) from the National Growth Fund, DUTCH is developing a different way of workplace learning. This is happening in phases. In the first phase, DUTCH is developing the possibilities to replace 50% of the practical hours in certain healthcare courses with simulated learning resources: digital learning resources or physical and/or virtual simulation. This is initially happening for the courses for operating room assistants, anaesthesia assistants and radiodiagnostic laboratory technicians.

Check out the DUTCH timeline to see which phase we are currently in.

B. Performing Stakeholder Analysis DUTCH

Saxion, HAN and Fontys Universities of Applied Sciences will start conducting the stakeholder analysis in January 2024. They will involve a total of 150 different participants: students, professionals, trainers, developers, etc. With interviews, scenario sessions and focus groups, they will address needs, values, ideas about simulation education and skills. In order to find sufficient participants and to have a good representation of all regions, we will actively seek contact with the FZO regional coordinators or appointed quartermasters.

Do you have any questions or feedback based on the research proposal? Or would you like to register yourself or someone else as a participant for the stakeholder analysis? Please contact Merlijn Smits or Marjolein den Ouden: mlmsmits@saxion.nl / memdenouden@saxion.nl.

D. Appoint DUTCH project managers per region

Each FZO Region appoints a project manager who is responsible for involving and developing the regional network of the parties involved. In this way, all parties remain involved and we facilitate the field. DUTCH project managers work in the FZO regional division.

F. Data workflow preparations

(Workflow 3)

Performance measurement and feedback are important components of the training courses, and therefore also of DUTCH. In work stream 3 we develop a system for objective monitoring and scoring based on data. Obtained data are also a source for scientific research.

H. Preparations Human capital as a driver of the transition (Workflow 5)

Digital learning environments are a suitable and future-proof solution that remains combined with working and learning in the workplace.

In order to gain flying hours and learning experiences. In the transition approach, attention is paid to the change for healthcare professionals, work and practice supervisors, trainers in physical simulation and theory trainers.

2024

A. Design phase & preparation

  • Program management setup

  • Preparation of setting up the DUTCH project manager network

  • Preparing stakeholder analysis

  • Preparation of financial and legal preconditions with VWS and NGF

C. Development of simulated training modules (Workstream 1)

Phase 1: national inventory (per region) of existing simulated learning resources.
Phase 2: preparation (further) development phase of existing and new teaching materials: preparation and implementation of financial arrangement in collaboration with VWS and implementing agency
.

In order to replace the current practical hours with simulation education, we examine per Entrustable Professional Activity (EPA) to what extent these;

  • is suitable for virtual or physical simulation;

  • in what form, and;

  • by what means.

In the course of 2024, we will determine which existing simulated learning resources we can further develop and scale up from DUTCH. And for which courses there are no suitable simulated learning resources yet. We will develop these.

For this we use regional expertise from practice and education. The teaching materials can only become good if healthcare professionals, practical trainers and work supervisors participate in the development.

Your input is therefore important.

Think about:

  • Evaluate existing simulated learning resources.

  • Help develop and test new learning resources in different phases.

  • Promote implementation of the teaching materials in your own department, in education and within your region.

This is done in collaboration with private parties such as (M)edTech and knowledge institutions.

E. Development of DUTCH platform (Workstream 2)

We are preparing a first version of the DUTCH platform. We are doing this by preparing a Plan of Requirements (PvE) that will be put on the market via open tender. In order to achieve our goals, we are developing a digital platform. All trainers, hospitals, skills centres and students will have access to this platform. The platform:

  • provides access to all DUTCH simulation learning resources;

  • stimulates innovation of teaching materials;

  • is suitable for students, healthcare professionals & trainers/teachers.

The platform is also being designed in close collaboration with expertise from the field, education and the tech sector.

Would you like to help shape the platform? Contact us.

G. Preparations workflow Regiohub as accelerator (Workflow 4)

In workstream 4 we are targeting existing skills centers and training spaces to promote physical simulation education in the region.
